Chapter 15

Liam had a decision to make, but exactly what that decision would be, he didn’t know. He had to make sure he was doing the right thing for Isa and for himself.

He knew what he should do, but still, he hesitated.

He wandered the halls for a bit and saw Isa slip through the door to the gem halls. He hadn’t spent much time down there except when he was helping Jude set up for his romantic night with Grace.

He probably shouldn’t follow Isa, but he did anyway. He found her in the sapphire room, staring at all of the glittering stones. He watched her, the love in his chest nearly overwhelming him.

“You know, they are pretty, but you’re prettier.”

She spun and scowled at him. Even angry, she was beautiful. “What are you doing here?”

“Well, your life is still in danger, and I worried about you being here alone.”

She straightened her shoulders and met his eyes. “I’m perfectly safe.”

He crossed the room and closed the distance between them. “Have you forgotten about the crossbow, the poison, and the spell that nearly killed you?”

She took a couple of steps back. “I have not. But all of those things were in my room. I’m just as safe here as I am in my own room.”

She had a point.

“But if I could follow you without you realizing, so could they. You ditched your guards. Again.”

She folded her arms and stared at him, not saying anything. It would be so easy to lean down and kiss her. Maybe then, they could put this all behind them. Or she could stick a dagger in his heart again. He wasn’t sure which one it would be.

“Pierre wants me to become a guardian.” He spit it out because he needed to see her reaction. Judge her thoughts on the matter. But her face revealed nothing.

“You told me that already.”

“And what do you think?”

She strolled away and into the amethyst room. “It doesn’t matter what I think. It’s Pierre’s decision.”

“But I care what you think. If you tell me no, I won’t do it.” He hoped that he might gain her trust this way. He’d listen to her.

“I could just as easily tell you to do it. It might be the best way to get rid of you. Most die in the ceremony.”

“But I won’t because I love you and only want what’s best for you.”

She snorted. “Is that what they told you? You were lied to. You could die even if you have my best interests at heart. The magic decides, and it’s completely random.”

He couldn’t tell if she was just trying to get under his skin.

“Isa, please. Tell me what to do.”

She studied him. Then, she moved toward him. “You know I want to love you so badly.”

His heart lurched, and he wanted to reach for her, but he stopped himself. He didn’t want to spook her. “What’s stopping you?”

“Your betrayal and dishonesty. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to get over that.”

He let out a breath.
